(London) A registrar with the Islington Council has filed an employment equity suit accusing the North London borough of discrimination by requiring her to conduct civil partnership ceremonies for same-sex couples.
The woman claims that her religious rights have been violated because she is a devout Christian opposed to gay unions.
Civil partnerships became legal in 2005 and Islington town hall has become the third most popular spot in the UK to hold the ceremonies.
But the woman, whose name has been withheld by the council because of the suit, has refused to perform them. Other registrants have not complained and a council spokesperson said no same-sex couple has been turned away.
More than 600 gay and lesbian couples have had their unions at the hall.
The borough encourages couples to make it a formal affair and a large number of gay male couples have donned tails and top hats for their unions.
When the civil partnership law went into effect the borough proclaimed it Pink Wednesday and handed out pink lapel flowers to staff to wear as they served champagne to guests.
Civil partnerships provide all of the rights of marriage but without the the name.
Conservative church groups have opposed civil partnerships and if the lawsuit is successful it could lead to dozens of other registrars across the UK to refuse to perform the ceremonies.

Honestly, how much longer are we going to live in a world in which love isn't tolerated or encouraged? If I could have one wish and know that it would come true I'd go back to the people who wrote the first version of the Bible or even the Constitution and say to them "Look, I know it's hard to believe...but somewhere down the line people are going to get SO stupid that they're going to think that some people love incorrectly...so, if you could just put a note in there that HATE is what is wrong and LOVE is what is right...that'd be great. Also maybe a footnote about warmongering Presidents named Bush?"
